Only reason I believe this is because my grandfather got diagnosed with covid last week. Then this week he was hospitalized for not eating and basically wanting to die. Tells me his immune system was just compromised from not taking care of himself and he got sick because of it.

I think most government employees will look forward to implementing lockdowns. Work from home, overtime pay, pay raises, pandemic bonuses ensures a repeat performance.

Lockdown will incite larger resistance. Much larger. Today. It's not an if. It will. Unless death justifies it. Do variants cause that? Your later point is spot on - which states will adopt it. This could be a mostly blue vs red situation, where places like NY and CA lockdown while many red states don't.
What's that do to his campaign? Unelectable. Because the other runner will defy. He'll rally for resistance to it. Because it is electable. Unless we're talking the deaths justifying it. Most will see it as another dumb stunt. Emergency powers to extend admin. That will incite much much more resistance.
The only way it would be enforced is if it kills on a scale of the original strain. Now why is that? You have all these boosters and they were worth shit. You're immune compromised.
