HP ink printers and multifunctional devices have hugely dumped price to compete with alternatives, and HP plan was to make profit on selling ink cartridges for insane price.
So, there is funny situation appeared with HP multifunctional devices - you could buy a printer+scanner cheaper than separate scanner. When people use that things just like a scanner, HP have butthurt - they sell their device may be lower than prime cost and didn't get the rest from selling ink cartridges.
Really, that's all just greed and stupid attempts to think out stupid ways to cheat over customers. In that case HP just overcheated itself.
Of course, in the perfect world such behaviour should be at least condemned, and all wearable and consumable things used in any machinery and devices like printer cartridges should be standardised among all manufacturers, just like USB/network/display connectors or batteries. However our world is far from perfect, so, for shure, we wil see more such ridiculous things like in OP with growing ridiculousness.
