I believe the date actually comes from a pivotal event in human history around 4000 BC, and this event has been misunderstood, misinterpreted, and deliberately disguised in the intervening time.
As for Bishop Ussher's date, I believe for certain technical reasons that the methodololgy for his chronology was fundamentally and irretrievably flawed, but I always found it odd he came up with that same 4000 BC date. Mere coincidence, I have to believe, but a very strange one nonetheless.

Psychologist Steve Taylor wrote a book back in 2005 titled, "The Fall: The Insanity of the Ego in Human History and the Dawning of A New Era".
