And the fires started at the same time, across a wide geographic region. There are several candidates:

Orbital focused energy source.
Manipulation of the ionosphere above the region to cause focused energy delivery to small points to raise their temperature.
Arson pixies with walkie talkies all commanded by a master leprechaun who hates Canadian bacon.
