I do recall hearing about thorium nuclear reactors around 10 years ago. Haven't heard much since.
There were many arguments for thorium reactors, but one in particular was that thorium decays after 300 years. So in the catastrophic event of a meltdown the area will be habitable/safe after 300 years...as opposed to 10000 years with current reactors
