Back in the late 00’s, I was a fleet manager for a OTR trucking company. With Citrix and telephone forwarding services, my physical location meant absolutely nothing, but was also necessary to comply with DOJ reporting requirements. Later on I did some OEC work with the same company. Same principle- all I needed was an email and Citrix.
Same thing with requesting detention and layover pay- all those things could be done from home. Same with load planning and customer service. The only thing the physical yard and office complexes provided- was a home base for the truck drivers. and even then, they had a couple of company based yards in multiple locations.
Call center work can now be accessed by anyone, anywhere. I called one company to cancel a recurring charge, and overheard a rooster crowing at 5pm. I laughed and mentioned it to the service rep, and she said “yea, I’m in the Philippines, and it’s 4am here”.
There are bookoodles of government work that can be done from home- but that’s not saying much.
At the very beginning of Covid, we even did piano lessons via GoogleMeet or Zoom….. all of the things are very possible for real jobs.
They may not be desirable, but they are possible and their absence would be felt in the real world
And how are they testing for this 'covid', when none of the tests actually work?
The 'tests' work "perfectly", delivering 'positive' results on demand.
It really made me think less of my coworkers, who took leave for weeks on end, after taking home tests.
