In defense of the normie I would have to say that you need 3 things to become non-normie (i.e. awake)
1-You have to have a certain type of intelligence.
IQ is correlated but it's not IQ specifically. You need to be able to think abstractly, something which very low IQ people cannot really do to a certain degree. AND you also need to have independent thoughts.
2-You need to have time.
Some people have been so crushed in life that they never get time to think things through. They have no energy to do so. Some are doing multiple jobs, loans, problems, divroce, etc.. That they do not have the luxury of free thinking. They just go with the flow until they die.
3-You need to have been shocked or hurt by the system.
Some groups of people have had it real good with them that they never have any reason to doubt the system. It rewarded them and they see themselves isolated from anyone suffering.
All that said, I think there is a difference between both groups. The difference I believe is in degree and not in kind but perhaps this could be said between us humans and animals?
This difference in degree of consciousness could mean the difference between the salve and the free man. Historically, the salve was someone who was willing to accept being a slave. Surrendering to his enemy.
A free man was someone who chose death over slavery.
What happened is that we have a world which prefers slaves over free men. This has been going for hundreds of years which means our numbers are dwindling.
They are marching humanity towards an ant-colony form of existence, will they succeed?

imho, #3 is probably the biggest driver of waking up.
...although, too much or certain kinds of #1 probably makes a person pre-disposed to #3.
