For example Aaron Burr, despite overwhelming evidence that he was working with the Brits to break away the western territory into a separate country, was found "not guilty" in his treason trial because Chief Justice John Marshall set the standard for treason so high. Jefferson was rightly pissed off about it.
However, that high standard for treason in the long run was a good thing, else you'd see all the J6ers on trial for that, which has a much harsher penalty.
The timing, I believe, is tit-for-tat to reel the Dems back from the "arrest Trump" brigade they are on.
