Silent, deadly and handy thing, that shovel blade is made from very good, nearly knife grade steel (have one in car trunk as a tool). So, it is quite possible that in some circumstances some reconnaissance/saboteur group killed some enemy guard with shovel.

Funny, I'm trying to find what is official military shovel in US, as "navy seal shovel", "special forces shovel", etc, but google gives me mostly images of that Soviet standard sapper/trench shovel and it's modern varieties from amazon or survivalist and tourist hardware sites.
Theoretically Gerber could produce such kind of equipment for US military, but I could not find any mention of that on their site, only camping things.

I saw this, and my first thought was Battlefield I where the trench shovel/ax is a melee weapon.

How would it make sense to anyone Russians would use melee weapons in placement of guns in any mind. Clearly they would be taken out at range.
For close quarter fighting, I suspect a shovel would be a decent choice.
