I haven't been following Edward Dowd much-- has he gotten a bunch of stuff wrong that he reports on? That's the metric I'd use to measure veracity. Lots of legitimate reasons a source wouldn't want to be made public.

Burning a source is a good way to ensure you don't get more intel. If the source is good, they should be protected.
