I've known someone who turned down a Sony music contract, and they just released their music and made CDs themselves (and this was before music online). For a LARGE amount of people out there, making music is the fun, not money or fame or whatever. Even amongst the "controlled" musicians, it's easy to see the real musicians who do it out of love of making music more than anything.
Of course, I don't think most people mind appreciation of their music...even animals appreciate music. Plants too.
More than you would think. I used to play pool a lot, and a fair amount of the guys there lived off the grid for the most part. This was mainly in the time before gold and silver took off. Even so, you can't pay for everything just with that. I hardly doubt you are free from fiat currency yourself.

I think it's actually worse than that. I've seen poker players detained and their money straight up stolen.
