I think the legislature granted them too much power in response to the propaganda about a "war on terrorism"

Patriots Act and NDAA (National Defense Act passed under Obama with worm Republicans)

Both very peculiar names for the bills given that they were UNpatriotic and was offensive toward Americans, not in defense of their privacy and basic rights.
