My family had the Family Truckster...aka the 1984 Chevy Caprice Estate.
My dad used to keep an oversized plastic/rubber grasshopper in the side/back window for the "trunk" (actually two rear facing seats...motion sickness heaven as it were).
We lived in a bad part of the city, so it definitely warded off would-be thieves.
