There have been strong axes between both the US and Canada to Ukraine that I suspect go back even before WW2.
For example, many people (around here) know that Chrystia Freeland, Deputy PM of Canada, had a grandfather named Michael Chomiak, who was the premier Nazi propagandist in Ukraine during the war. You might have thought, "Well, okay, but that was her grandfather and it was a long time ago." Here's what I just learned recently from an article written a few years back:
Freeland happens to own, with her sister, an apartment that overlooks the Kyiv square.
That would be Maidan Square, the birthplace of the Color Revolution(tm) that led directly to all the current horror and suffering in Ukraine. Just so happens. What a coincidence, huh?
