It's a reference to the "Roots" mini-series (which was fictional but everyone believes it was a documentary).
In it, Kunta Kinte is captured in Africa and transported to colonial America as a slave, where he was assigned the name Toby. He never accepted being a slave and eventually ran away from the plantation. To punish him and physically hinder him from escaping again, they chopped off half his foot:
Kunta kente gets his foot cut off
This is how we were all programmed and traumatized back in the 70's. Looking back, I think it was also a warning to all of us.
