The sinuses are prone to invasion by foreign items. Dust can carry spores, spores can grow and put fungal items into the tissues. Doctors have actually found fungi - even mushrooms!! growing in sinuses. The nose get sinvaded by viruses and bacteria and as I said fungi. I'll debate the medical science on this til the cows come home and furnish citations to back it up.
