Problem for me is I work in the trades and we are required to wear heavy steel toe boots at all times on site. They will literally kick you off the job if you don't have proper work boots.
Great post, I've been thinking about this lately because I noticed that the illustrated women in old children's books aren't wearing any shoes. Also we recently moved to the country and our neighbor's kids don't wear shoes on their livestock farm. So I've taken to going barefoot on quick trips around the yard and it feels really good to stretch your feet.
However I wouldn't do that at night, my headlamp illuminates spider eyes and the ground is FULL of them. Apparently copperheads come out at night too but I haven't seen one yet.
For alternative barefoot shoes may I recommend simple Minnetonka leather-bottomed moccasins. They're basically leather socks with no rubber sole so you may still be able to ground. I've worn them on pavement just fine, as long as it's not too cold out they should be fine.
I wear zero drop, open toe box shoes for this reason. They allow my feet to bend and splay, twits as needed. And no heel to wear out and give me a mis step and shit. Nothing to "wear" out in the heel. AND they werent that much $$$ I am on a fixed income (disability) and got these shits. They were like $35 on Amazon. The brand I have is called Whitin. I recommend. Also since changing the shoes my athletes feet has healed up. As are my ingrown toe nails.
To cold outside for me to walk around without shoes. I remember though that the best Brazilian soccer players used to be brought up not playing with shoes, and that was given as an explanation of why their technical skills was so far beyond that of those from Europe. Today some of the modern soccer shoes have gotten very thin, although you still need shoes to provide better grip on grass. That being what this conspiracy brings to my mind.
Wait until you learn about grounding / earthing. Put your bare feet on the ground and reconnect with the earth.
