From a secular perspective: Self development requires developing a perspective of the meta self: the self contextual by social roles and by circumstance. This allows us to develop a sense of others. Achieving our maximum potential can only come from transcending the self. Those who envy the selfish are not aware of this opportunity.

From a spiritual perspective, the self is the ultimate idol. This causes idolatry which separates us from God and prevents us from experiencing life to the fullest. It also causes sin which carries consequences.
