Do we really think our society is to the point where we could learn anything beneficial from this event and use the results in a meaningful way now or in the near future? IMO, it's far more likely that we're just simulations that think our experience is 'real'. NPCs in video games don't actually think, but if they did... They'd be programmed to accept their inputs as real.
