People used to go to church to hear the "good news". What they want is life, and they will go along with anything and anyone they think will bring it to them.
Finally, there is a fine line between those people and others who recognize that living is something more than avoiding death. Indeed, there are certain conditions--like slavery--which are worse than death itself.
