Now I'm guessing these space agencies and meteorogical agencies have some sort of system in place using various ground and sea based weather stations to help them come up with these animations. You wouldn't need satellites to see how atmospheric pressure was changing around the world for instance, you just need a network.
However we do have thousands of balloon satellites that can stay aloft for 2 years. Nasa and friends launch these things constantly. I imagine they have all kinds of uses including weather observation.
