I doubt it is coming back online. No reason to as long as sanctions are in place.

Russia didn't have gas, 150 years ago. But it probably had Napoleon? Or WW1. It lead to communism, where it stopped the Germans getting the gas. Some things never change.

Because the Coal fired cars are even better?

WW1 was the fall of Prussia and the emperor. They had a holy emperor, it was largely aligned with the popery. Influence had changed since the reformation and the rise of protestantism. But it was very aligned with Germany. It was going to acquisition Bosnia into its spheres of influence. Sparking off Serbia aligning with Russia. Because the Ottomans were breaking apart and losing far more influence especially in the Balkans causing former territory to realign. The Ottomans under threat from Russia gaining territory and British and French etc influences. Egypt the Mideast peninsula and even Persia and Africa. It kept some alignment with Germany but was shedding territory.

There is a lot more too it. But yea WW1 Prussia was decinimated, and it was the fall of the emperor, they of course trace back to appointment by the pope. But I mean Napoleon had a pop at it prior. Prior reformation much bigger break off, and protestants. Before that Islamic invasion. But it still held much more of Europe with German alignment.

Bismark had also Centralised German Government away from the former separate Duchy's, spanning separate governance or kingdom. A lot was changing. But two empires fell in WW1, Ottoman, and the Austrians/Prussians. Three if you count Russia. Of course the British Empire quickly changed. You can count the German Monarchy in there, Empire not quite if they were aligned to Prussia.

There is a pattern here. Change. But banks probably had a much darker hand at slicing away influence from monarchs, and religions. Who knows fully. There isn't an official narrative. There was only the fall of Empires in WW1. Of course the New World massively changed the dynamics, and the later rise of countries. But America entering is what won it.
