This was a big story in the 1990s
The Feminization of Nature by Deborah Cadbury (1997) (archive.org full copy)
Details how the UK govt. discovered genital mutilation from endocrine disrupting chemicals in UK rivers and issued D-Notices to the press, which threatens publishers with jail if they print anything about it. It was eventually re-discovered by other scientists and the D-Notice was withdrawn.
It also includes the story of the chemical DES, which was prescribed for decades and deformed grandchildren, making them infertile or other defects.
