Also the next part of that book is those useless people crash on prehistoric earth and become the future inhabitants instead of the actual people that were meant for the 10 million year experiment to find what is the great question, of which they know the answer is 42.

Didn't the people end up dying on the planet, because they got rid of all the people that clean ear receivers on their desk phones, which caused a huge bacterial issue in their ears, leading to worldwide demise?

As much as we hate middle men, they do serve a networking purpose with specialized knowledge. If you "know a guy" who can connect you with the right person, then that man is a "middleman".
