That’s an interesting question, if you take the interviewee at their word, they are “indistinguishable” from us, but also genetically distinct, with an “offworld” origin, with exclusively in-group breeding amongst the “13 families”...
That kind of thought, along with the suppressed subject of giants, while also taking into consideration the “established science” of Neanderthal, Denisovan, Floresensis, etc “types” of humans, leads me to think that maybe the image presented by “star-trek” (every species is humanoid but has a culturally distinctive hat) might be closer to reality than we tend to think (lol)
I think it’s possible our physical forms are, in some ways, “engineered” - I remember reading an interesting interpretation of Genesis which focused in on the original hebrew language and looked at it through the “fresh” eyes of modern genetic modification.
I just looked for a while and couldn’t find it unfortunately - but it basically described the events of Genesis in terms of the genetic engineering of physical life on earth... “formed from dust” being interpreted as something like writing the genetic code molecule by molecule, and the creation of Eve (Adam cut open - a bone removed - and Eve fashioned from the bone, or perhaps the genetic information contained in the blood (bone marrow)? I’m not doing it justice, but it was along those lines. I’ll try and find it!

Seriously though, look at Heidelbergensis. It might not even be a culturally distinctive hat, just one that is best adapted for their circumstances.
If we chewed denser food longer and lived without fire or light, it'd be beneficial to have massive jaws and large eyes to absorb low light. But otherwise they look pretty human to me.
The power the elite have is through exclusivity. Whether their genetic distinction comes from inbreeding and/or offworld beings, it doesn't seem to have a marked effect on their intelligence. They are actually pretty dumb and lazy, which is why it is so easy to see through what they do. I'm sure that there are some smart ones, but geez, just look at the people they pick to represent them.
