Hungry mobs won't descend on your place all at once like zombies, they're gonna try and group up into as small a group as possible that they still think can get the job done, because that means the spoils are spread between less people. Sure, you'd probably be overwhelmed by 20 people, but you're way more likely to get groups of 5 or so. Which is very doable on home turf
Then try the rural areas, fly over country.
Am in the woods, which have plenty of swamp areas with gators and vipers. So, bring it.
When the petrol/gas dries up mobility will be severely reduced.
And most people are not used to going afoot. Most people are soft and lazy. Going afoot is entirely out of their comfort zone.

The conditions of the environment will naturally cull the hoards.
