Researcher Jim Stone worked for the NSA and got his training about the mid-90's, as I recall. He was told never to have a private conversation anywhere near a telephone, as they could all be surveilled even when "hung up". They told him no car was safe either. If he really wanted to have a private talk, he was told to drive to an open field and walk at least 100 yards from the car.

The aspect I found really stunning was that the NSA even at that time had machinery in mail processing centers to divert snail mail they wanted to monitor. After they opened and read it, they had a variety of envelopes to "reseal" it in. I think he also mentioned they had stocks of ink and paper to modify the letters themselves.

circa 2019, the speech-to-text function on my phone was pretty hit or miss. Driving? wouldn't work. Fan running nearby? wouldn't work. Not clearly enunciating Ev. Er. Y. Sing. Llll. Word? wouldn't work.

One day I'm in my bedroom, trying to speech to text on my phone, and hear a knock on the kitchen door. I toss the phone on the bed, walk about 30' and around a corner to speak with whoever knocked. It's my landlord. He never comes in and is just stopping by to let me know about some maintenance stuff. The conversation takes less than two minutes.

I go back to my bedroom, pick up the phone, and the whole fucking conversation was converted to text on my phone. There were weird autocorrects/autocompletes, but there would have been no prob at all figuring out the specifics of the conversation I'd had with my landlord.

phone tech picks up alot more than we know.
