Mercury vapour could be toxic, but it vapourizes very weakly at normal temperatures, so you need to try hard to get somehow poisoned by mercury vapour.

In no case broken mercury thermometer could be dangerous, just collect all that shiny balls into plastic or glass jar with cup and you are completely safe. No need to call emergency or special team with hazmats and stuff. Don't use vacuum cleaner for this, it could break mercury drops into mercury fog that will be impossible to collect and it will be vapourize more effectively due to large surface.

So, a little drop of mercury could easily destroy a lot of aluminium turning it into heap of aluminium oxide. That is why it is prohibited to transport anything with metal mercury on the planes.

It is strange that there is such enormous fear about mercury was created for unknown purpose.
