I like how the old houses had the kitchen and the living quarters separated by a big porch. That way all the pests and the heat (fire hazard, smells) from cooking stay out of the bedrooms.

Knew a gal in a bad area of Baltimore that lived in an old house with her mom, and their kitchen had a gigantic industrial fan in the wall...I'm talking like a 6-7 ft. blade. I'm guessing the house used to be a restaurant or something way back. It'd take all the smell out from the kitchen instantly (and most of the air in the house with it). Really cool.

After the flood of 2016, which wiped us out, we went minimalist. I also expanded our garden to 1.5 acres. Also have laying hens and fryers.
