Use youtube vanced or kiwibrowser to have youtube keep playing in the background and block ads. Don't need to give youtube your money for basic website functionality
I know, that just means they had to stop development. The app still works. If it stops working I'll move to kiwibrowser and get the extensions that give it the same functionality as vanced.
If any commercial stands out to me as being especially annoying or degenerate I just don't buy from the company anymore. I never watch commercials at home. Only when I'm at someone else's place and they use a smart TV with the YouTube app. God they are annoying.
There may be something to your musings but I stopped watching commercials regularly many years ago, so, I'm kinda out of the loop on just how annoying they've been on average for some time now.

Make a boycott list and also a list to support. It does make a difference or just takes a lot of cooperation and patience. Amazon, Disney, Netflix finally learning this lesson and too late since many better alternatives have now emerged.

Literally EVERY OTHER TV BREAK SESSION is like: "Fighting the pandemic is all, do not suffer from fatigue!!"
