Hahaha. I'm gonna laugh at it. Because yes if the monkey doesn't get its bananas, the monkey can't boomerang. It goes without saying. It's all the monkeys want today, until they're jettisoned into Mars.
There was however this other huge issue on what the Ukrainian coastline would've become. What it exactly meant. By recognising the Donbas and Luhansk oblasts, Ukraine would've had virtually no coastline. On recognition of them the same problems would still be there on the other side of its coast, by wanting to join or partner with the EU, no sooner would they want to adopt security for any other coastal regions.
If you snooze, you lose.
It's not to suggest that what happened was no accident, and it didn't happen overnight. But technically it was always going too, despite of whichever puppet was empowered.
Any history will always come back to this point of conflict. Nothing had changed in those 400 years or indeed since the Romans. Perhaps briefly hence it as always remains contested.
