I used those facts to indicate my scepticism of the Portuguese/German investigators actually following a good lead.

It could even be that they plan to kill him in prison and blame it on vigilante justice as a result of all the media buzz. After that, they could then release whatever they want regarding him and the McCann case and nobody would have any interest in disputing it.
