I'm prone to pleurisy. If I am awake, and moving when my oxygen levels require assistance I have to be given something to make me drowsy. Otherwise the mask shown in the picture feels like sticking your head out the windiw of a speeding car. You can feel the breeze, but it's too strong to breathe the air. That's why people take the mask off. It's not trying to be difficult, the mask makes you feel as if you can't breathe.
If you don't get medical personal that understand the issue ( or you can't articulate why like elderly or children, or it's not in your chart) the staff will intubate you because they have other patients. It's not about you, it's about them.
"Pleurisy (PLOOR-ih-see) is a condition in which the pleura — two large, thin layers of tissue that separate your lungs from your chest wall — becomes inflamed. Also called pleuritis, pleurisy causes sharp chest pain (pleuritic pain) that worsens during breathing. One pleural layer of tissue wraps around the outside of the lungs.
