The phrase "Dark Ages" was pseudo-historical propaganda from "enlightenment" era folks who forget about the High Middle Ages, let alone the Renaissance. In Europe, you had at most, a century or two of degradation after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and several barbarian invasions. By the empire of Charlemagne, and once the Viking threat was controlled, Christendom was what went on to rule the world.
