They want you to live in perpetual fear. It makes you dumber because your brain shifts resources to boost physical reflexes and speed at the cost of processing thoughts. It literally makes people easier to control. Politicians have known this for a long time, it just took this long to reach a state where they had enough brainwashed youth to get everyone to buy into it.
