He was an actor and worker in Jewish theater "Shalom" in early 80s and was close to zionists circle. So, yes, clown since the beginning. He was choosen by KGB in late 80s to create an "opposition" party in USSR to show "democratization". Being Jewish he was untouchable to the end. Got 8 jabs (as stated) before death.
