Yes, the Reagan attempt was real. John Hinckley SENIOR was a political supporter of George H.W. Bush and a fellow Texas oilman. JUNIOR was just a distraction, and his bullets had virtually no chance of hitting Reagan. He was shot from a balcony right above the building's exit.
Bizarrely, this was reported by eyewitness Judy Woodruff. Normally, you'd think this meant it absolutely did not happen, but the critical factors are she was a nobody NBC correspondent at the time and they never discuss it any more:
Judy Woodruff was at the scene said a shot came from the balcony. In an official White House photo taken at the time of the shooting, you can see a man in a sport coat with his arm protruding from a room window on the balcony in what looks like a firing position in line with the shot hitting the limo that in turn wounded Reagan.
