The tldr is that 8 yeas ago, two areas in the donbas tried to leave the ukraine and the western govt at that time wouldn't let them so a fight broke out between the donbas and the rest of the country. Ukraine has been shelling that territory for 8 years now and Russia has been aiding that same territory. What you see this year is the culmination of an 8 year feud.

They bombed Russian civilians in Donbas for 8 years, that counts as provocation.
