This question just goes to show how sadly simplistic the mainstream narrative has become. If you only listen to 'the news' these days, you end up barely knowing a thing. The tldr is that 8 yeas ago, two areas in the donbas tried to leave the ukraine and the western govt at that time wouldn't let them so a fight broke out between the donbas and the rest of the country. Ukraine has been shelling that territory for 8 years now and Russia has been aiding that same territory. What you see this year is the culmination of an 8 year feud.
Why would the Ukrainian government agree to them just leaving? You think that if some people decided to carve a piece out of a country, they should just be allowed to do so?
If Ukraine was really shelling them for 8 years, how come the area is not reduced to a wasteland?
Please provide evidence and casualties of the damages these "shellings" have caused.
Even wiki agrees that the donbas peeps wanted to leave even before the Russians helped them. QUality of living drastically plummeted when they left the soviet union and Ukraine has been considered by many to be one of the most corrupt countries on earth, the people of donbas wanted to steer their own course vs having the corrupt oligarchs get most of the money. Ukraine has only been its own country for about 30 years, 8 of which donbas has been trying to leave but even before that, tensions were rising almost form the start of the country. It was a country cobbled together of ethnically not matching groups of people who ended up not getting along, so yes I do think Donbas should be allowed to leave. And if Texas voted to leave the USA, I would say to allow them to do that too. Maybe just read the wiki on 'war in donbas' or like any other history of the situation there, before saying you have doubts, this is not secret knowledge. And the areas along the border of donbas and the rest of ukraine were indeed pretty much a wasteland even before Russia invaded. You can read a decent explanation of the issues here: https://greekreporter.com/2022/02/22/history-donbas-donetsk-luhansk/
Pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions took over government buildings in 2014, proclaiming the regions as independent “people’s republics” after Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
so, some Russian goons decided to create their own country, started a war and somehow this is Ukraine's fault?
Why would Ukraine bomb their own territory?
