Let's face it, Americans are fat, and we waste an enormous amount of food. Further, if food prices did go way up, people in the West would respond by cutting back on expensive foods and wasting less. Also, people would reallocate their money from unnecessary items to necessary items to pay for food (a necessity) if prices got high enough. And because, compared to the rest of the world, the developed world can pay higher prices, the food that does exist will be allocated via prices to those whom can pay for it.
But what about Sub-Saharan Africa? Or places in South America? What about places where people are already marginally getting by with little money to spare and who are NOT fat and who do NOT waste food? Ah. Well there you have it. If you're making $20 a day doing shitty jobs in thirdworldistan, and suddenly your rice and beans triple in price, you're going to go hungry. Civilization is only a few missed meals away from anarchy.
So, just like the "crises" in Libya and Syria that got Europe inundated with "refugees" from Africa and the Middle East, and the United States is perpetually flooded with the brown peoples from beyond its southern border, the hungry hordes will start coming again. And you, you racist bigot that worries about the Great Replacement, you'd be a heartless bastard to keep them from being your new neighbor.
Me, I'm not saying it. But if times get hard in Africa, they will take their guns and kill everything that moves to eat. Lots of species will become endangered. The only thing that keeps them from wiping them out now is that it's easier to have white men pay to come and kill them, since they can't take the meat with them.
No, it's not simple math, because every American could cut 1/3 of their calories and still be fine. Further, Americans waste tons of food. Various pre-covid articles out there say it's about 1/3 of all the food the typical household purchases in a given year. Then you add in people who prep, or people who change their diets around to eat less expensive foods.
There is slack. Lots of slack. But not in 3rdworldistan.
