Russia offered to leave Ukraine alone in exchange for DOnbas and Crimea and a promise of neutrality from Ukraine, that might have been what Russia wanted all along, not a total occupation, just Donbas and Crimea which have mostly people that wanted to leave Ukraine anyway.

Ukraine offered that at today's negotiations. Russia refused and asked for complete surrender.
guess now that they have all the sanctions anyway they are going for broke.
