Classical Russian spelling, and Ukrainian has always been Kiev. When the USA did the color revolution there, the Orange revolution, the neonazi’s used in the fighting force became the USA’s political dog in Ukraine that wanted to abolish ties to bolshevik Russia. Kyiv became the new (American) Ukrainian spelling.
Is it just a simple political move to flex that the new guys on the block run ukraine now? or maybe to jumble indexed content on the internet?

The "Kiev" spelling was introduced by a British map-maker in 1803
Reminds of how everybody in the world called it "ISIS" until Obama started calling it "ISIL" for some reason. It never fully took.
