Well, I happened to major in the Music Industry in college. RIM- recording industry and management. Not some full sail shit, like in the top 5 schools in the country for this.
All I have to say is that the A&R folks, the “scouts” of the industry, are looking for a very specific type of person. They are groomed and manipulated in ways that have to be on paper somewhere. It’s very methodical. Very Mk/monarch.
Ke$ha, Kurt Cobain, Kanye, Britney, professor Griff and others have tried to kinda “blow the whistle” on it, but i don’t think even they really grasp it. Music shapes culture like no other force— moreso than movies/film/tv. Do you really think the major media players would allow something to the forefront of American (and world) consciousness that would befall them?
Did you know, in the days of the CD, that there were huge warehouses in Nashville that they would fill with palettes of the CD d’joure so they can top the charts for the first two weeks after a new album launch? Multiple fake wholesalers would buy from record labels and all ship to the same warehouse. Their funding for these “wholesalers” came from the record labels themselves. Oh and Columbia House (owned by columbia records) would purchase a million copies of all the new columbia shit and started cross-selling this “padding” to other labels like capitol to boost bullshit artist one hit wonders who fit a particular image.
Good to see decentralization in music now and platforms open up to unknown and local artists. Good to see Fuck Joe Biden in the top spot on itunes.
It's got to still be crooked as hell. Courtney Love has spoken on this issue (pay to play). I would like to read more.
