Some more astute doctors, who were aware of the state of the science and that masks in general are unsanitary items if worn for more than a few minutes, wouldn't wear them at all during surgery since they seem to increase the risk of surgical wounds becoming infected.
Also as far as I know, only doctors and nurses in surgery wore masks, to keep from spreading bacteria from themselves into the patients who were undergoing surgery..... that true?
