I ran out of free NYT views before I could get a page that had the key as to what the colors mean, although at first glance it seems to me that many U.S. states do not correlate: Oregon, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Mississippi and Alabama. A similar pattern emerges globally; a number of deviations should be easy to spot.
