I think that if that crowd of fucking "world leaders" will rise against aliens (real or fake, does not matter), many people will definitely choose the opposite side.
However, really this article is not about that aliens. It is about discovering life outside the Earth. And having priest nearby is not a bad or insane idea, because that will rise a lot of theological questions, since many religions was posed by their priests as heavy Earth-centric.
As for "aliens as threat", AFAIK Verner von Braun told that after USSR and then, terrorists there will be aliens and asteroids used for fearmongering.
It's also statistically unlikely that two intelligent life planets are close enough to each other to ever make contact unless we can travel significantly faster than the speed of light.
Additionally, technological civilizations carry the seeds of their own destruction. e.g. a high-schooler doing gain of function research on Ebola in his garage. I could well see an upper limit on such civilizations at around a thousand years.
