There’s evidence for a few alchemists (true alchemy explained later) who have achieved immortality: “the philosopher’s stone”
Immortality sounds good on paper, but in reality, there are only a few people who could begin to bare the weight that brings upon one’s self.
Do you really think you have the cojones to deal with all the stress of the word? All of the good news and the bad news? Always remembering close relationships that end because you live on but your companions die? Can you bare to see people live in ignorance when you yourself got the answer?
Again, most people think they do. But they are very wrong.
There’s an old Christian/Gnostic principle that speaks of God being merciful, because He allows us to pass: God knowing that humans weren’t designed for an eternal physical life.
The exception to that are the very few people who have indeed come to such an understanding of nature, the physical world, the heavens, the very matter of creation, that they are blessed with a prolonged natural life. The philosopher’s stone is not a physical object, it is a representation of coming to the true understanding of what the world is, what it is made up of, and where it is going. You had to have mastered your mind, your body, and your spirit in order to achieve eternal (or rather, prolonged) life.

This is what enlightenment is about.
