Blood letting is still used today for some very good reasons. It's just a bit more refined than it used to be. We still use leeches, too.
Unless you have hemochromatosis, pretty much, you shouldn't be bloodletting. They used it for lots of stuff, like if you had typhus, for example, and it didn't help. Likely made things worse. And the medical profession had no way of detecting who had hemochromatosis until recently either.
Okay, ya got me, but I wanted to use an example of a widely overused and not overly helpful medical procedure to make my case. And didn't include leeches for that very reason.
How about lobotomies?
I think those were a conspiracy to find out if they could create unthinking people who would follow any order.
