It was affordable for one parent to have a shit job and feed a whole family, afford two cars, and a house, even as recently as the 1980s.
This happened because of the banking and insurance industries. Whenever you have to take out a loan for something the price you pay goes up by 2x-3x of buying it outright, and then, over time, inflation sets in, so affordable housing now requires loans, same of cars, and a college education.
Doesn't mean poor people deserve to be childless, or stay at home to raise them and live off welfare, as if that's even an option in most places where rents are going up.
