Mostly, the occult use symbols for recognition. In the times of early man, when language was still forming in various regions, most communication was symbolic. Today, when I communicate with computers, I have to use a symbol once in a while, but not often. I don't use symbols to communicate with any humans.
What does it change? Perception. If I don't allow myself to adhere to the face value given to the symbol from an occult, I have the ability to see past the symbolism for what groups have placed behind it.
